This week in art class students looked at Op Art, and artists such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely. Students learned that "Op" is short for optical illusion, and that the paintings and drawings often appear to move or seem three dimensional. We discussed contour line, shape and form, and opposite colors. Some students choose to create op art style line drawings of their hands or striped animals, such as zebras and tigers. Other students created opposite color collages with beautiful effects. The results were eye catching and beautiful. You can check out more student work on our October art class bulletin board across from the main office.

Congratulations to Jennifer for being our PS77 Artist of the Month for September. Jennifer always participates in class lessons and eagerly gets to work on all art room projects. She is a talented painter with a unique sense of color and brushwork. Jennifer always shares her work with her class during gallery walks and critiques, and says kind things about her classmates’ work. Jennifer’s work has been included in the VSA calendar and displayed in PS77 student exhibitions. Great job Jennifer! We can’t wait to see more of your work this year!

Students at P77K are off to a great start to the new school year! We have been learning about the art room rules, portfolios, and sketchbooks. Students also began learning some of the elements of art, such as line. The looked at many various types of lines - zig zag, curved, wavy, spiral, dotted, dashed, and of course, straight. They explored how lines can be thick and thin, go in different directions, and cross over each other to create different looks. Students then created portraits, which they surrounded with many different lines. Other students used a stamping technique to create overlapping circular lines. Finally, our talented artists used watercolors to complete their projects.

Welcome back to school students and parents! This year is going to be exciting! I have some fun new projects and activities planned, and I can't wait to share them with you. In addition to our art blog, I will also be using Remind to communicate with parents and students throughout the year. I will send home our class code durning the first week of school, so that you and your family can join the conversation. Looking forward to a wonderful school year!
